What is diabetes management?
Diabetes management involves the ongoing care and support required to help you effectively manage diabetes mellitus. This includes monitoring blood glucose levels, managing medications, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and reducing the risk of long-term complications. Our goal is to support you in achieving stable blood sugar levels and improving your overall health and wellbeing.
Can diabetes management have any harmful effects on me?
Diabetes management itself is safe; however, some treatments (such as medications or insulin) may have side effects. These can include low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), gastrointestinal upset, or weight changes depending on the therapy used. Your GP will discuss any potential risks with you and monitor your progress closely to minimise complications.
How is it managed?
Management is individualised and may include the following:
- Lifestyle advice (diet, exercise, weight management)
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Oral medications or injectable therapies (including insulin if required)
- Regular review of your overall health, including blood pressure and cholesterol
Your GP will work with you to develop a personalised management plan.
What do I need to bring?
You will need to have seen a GP at our clinic prior to your diabetes management appointment. The GP may arrange blood tests (such as HbA1c, cholesterol, and kidney function) and develop an initial care plan.
Please bring along:
- Any recent blood test results (if completed elsewhere)
- A list of your current medications
- Your blood glucose monitor and readings (if you check at home)
- Any relevant specialist reports
Having this information ensures your appointment runs efficiently and allows us to tailor your care appropriately. How long does it take?
Initial appointments typically take 20–30 minutes with the GP. Ongoing review appointments may be shorter, depending on your needs. Diabetes management is an ongoing process, and regular follow-up is important to ensure optimal control.
Can I have someone accompany me?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment if you wish. However, please avoid bringing young children where possible so you can focus on your consultation.
Are there any after-effects?
There are generally no immediate after-effects from a consultation. However, if your treatment plan changes, you may notice adjustments in your blood sugar levels as your body responds. Your GP will guide you on what to monitor and when to seek advice.
How long does it take to see improvement?
Many people begin to notice improvements in their energy levels and symptoms within a few weeks of starting or adjusting treatment. Blood glucose control, as measured by HbA1c, typically improves over a period of 2–3 months.
Should I have follow-up testing?
Yes. Regular monitoring is essential. This may include:
- HbA1c testing every 3–6 months
- Annual health checks (including eyes, kidneys, and feet)
- Periodic blood pressure and cholesterol reviews
Your GP will advise on the appropriate schedule based on your individual needs.
What is the cost for diabetes management?
Standard consultation fees apply. If you have a valid Medicare card, you may be eligible for a rebate. In some cases, care plans and allied health services may also be subsidised. Please speak with our reception team or your GP for further details.
